A Bovanat Rug, No. 64569 180x255cm

Fars region is home to many nomadic tribes who have mostly settled in the villages scattered in the area. The town of Bovanat is one such place. Like many other settlements in an area that historians refer to as a western Masepotemia, it has an ancient history that goes back thousands of years.

The Arabic-speaking nomads who have settled there weave carpets similar to the one here. The most noticeable characteristic of such rugs is their thick and lustrous wool pile.

The weaver here has filled the rug with stars that are probably an inheritance of their Eastern Semitic past and a reference to the Ishtar, the goddess of love, war and fertility.
