This fine flatweave is crafted using the traditional Sumak technique, where coloured wool and silk yarns are wrapped around cotton warps, secured by a plain weft after each row. Sumak technique allows for more intricate designs compared to typical warp-faced kilims, and results in a firmer, one-sided textile due to the loose yarn ends on the back.
This particular piece is the spontaneous creation of a young weaver, made entirely from memory without a drafted naqsha. Rooted in tribal life, its motifs reflect inherited traditions, natural surroundings, and the weaver’s personal expression, translating lived experience into pattern and rhythm.
