This flat-weave is a creation of the young Qashghai tribes and was originally used as a grain sack. Woven on horizontal looms in one piece, they are made from wool and goat’s hair, then folded and stitched into carriage sacks. Sturdy loops are added during weaving to secure the sack onto the back of mules. The simplicity of design, the versatility of use, and the patina and texture acquired over time make these pieces both fascinating and collectable. Many were woven as part of a young girl's dowry. They are charming tribal weavings, echoes of a lifestyle that is no more.
