A Caucasian Sumak flat-weave Number 43705 (212x143cm)

Sumak weaving is a complicated flat-weaving technique. This pattern is one of the most famous designs in Caucasian Sumaks and to make it in such a degree of intricacy requires years of experience and steady hands.

The "s" like motif seen in the design, whilst not apparent at first glance, is in fact a stylized dragon: A representation of power in the area. The example here consists of a rich colour combination and is very finely woven.

It is circa the 1980s and the weaver has used very fine handspun wool as warp and weft to make this amazing piece.
