A century ago, the city of Nain was renowned for its production of "Aba," a traditional Persian cloak woven from wool yarn by expert artisans. However, with the import of new industrial fabrics from the West in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which aligned more with contemporary fashion trends, the demand for these local garments declined, leading to the closure of many weaving workshops.
In response to this shift, the production of Persian carpets became a flourishing alternative, particularly due to the high demand in Europe and America. Visionary local investors, such as the Habibian and Mofidi brothers, recognized the opportunity and invited master weavers from nearby Isfahan. Together, they utilized local yarn spinners, dye masters, and former "Aba" weavers to establish carpet workshops, giving rise to the first generation of Nain rugs.
One of the distinctive features of these rugs was the use of traditional colours, such as various shades of blue, tan, beige, and white, which had previously been used to dye the yarn for the Persian cloaks. The soothing colour palette combined with intricate designs quickly gained popularity in the global market, and Nain carpets have since become a beloved staple of Persian rug production.
The legacy of Nain carpets continues today. With a reputation for elegance and craftsmanship, these rugs, such as the one pictured, are renowned for their intricate medallion patterns and harmonious colour combinations. This specific carpet showcases beautiful shades of blue, beige, and cream, with a medallion design that reflects the deep traditions of Persian craftsmanship. Nain carpets, now available in varying qualities, remain a cherished choice for adding sophistication and timeless beauty to interior spaces worldwide.
