Wool on cotton, natural dyes | Late 20th century
This magnificent Kerman rug is centred by a grand mandala medallion, a powerful symbol of unity and harmony, beautifully surrounded by intricate floral motifs and age-old emblems like cypress trees and paisleys.
The creation of such a piece begins long before weaving. It starts with a skilled designer who plots every knot on graph paper, translating complex imagination into a detailed plan. Materials are then prepared: hand-spun wool dyed with care, and looms warped to perfection.
It took two master weavers about a year to bring this vision to life, knot by knot—over four million of them. The result is a powerful artistic statement, a combination of heritage, precision, and visual splendour that could transform any large space.
