An Afshar Sirjan rug, 156157-150x205cm

Tribalism has been a significant aspect of life in the arid lands of the Persian Plateau since antiquity, as raising animals and the pursuit of grazing grounds were essential for survival. The tribes grew large, formed alliances, rose to power to dominate lands and territories, and fell. Afshars were one of such tribes that moved to Iran during the Seljuk conquest of the 11th century. They scattered from east to west and becamean important tribal group to the point that their khan, Nader (1688–1747 AD), became the king of Iran. Like many conquerors before them, the Afshars ultimately merged into the broader Persian culture. Today, the most significant heritage of the Afshars that remains is the history of Nader, the Persian King, and a fascinating variety of weaving traditions and styles.

The rug here is an examplewoven by Afshars of Sirjan in Kerman province. It is bold and honest, and with its muted colours, can serve as a fascinating decoration for a living room or any other space.
