Kilims such as this marvellous work by a weaver from the village of Harsin in Kurdistan are remarkable creations—bringing to life the inner feelings and enduring traditions of their makers.
The Kurds are an ancient ethnic group, a major nation that has inhabited parts of western and northern Mesopotamia since around 1000 BC. Today, they live across Iran, Iraq, and Turkey.
This is an old piece (circa 1950s), a true tribal weaving made by the weaver for her own family’s use. Such pieces are often passed down and sold by the second or third generation after the weaver. Most are one of a kind and highly collectable.
