A century ago, Nain was renowned for producing "Aba," a traditional cloak crafted from wool yarn by skilled weavers. However, with the introduction of industrial fabrics from the West during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which aligned with evolving fashion trends, the demand for these local garments diminished, leading to the closure of many workshops. Around the same time, the global interest in oriental carpets surged, particularly in Europe and America.
Local investors, such as the Habibian and Mofidi brothers, recognized this opportunity and brought in master weavers from neighbouring cities. By collaborating with local yarn spinners, dye masters, and former "Aba" weavers, they established carpet workshops and created the first generation of Nain rugs. A defining feature of these rugs was the traditional palette of colours, including various shades of blue, tan, beige, and white, originally used to dye the wool for cloaks.
These colours were well-received in the market and became a hallmark of Nain carpets, establishing a long-lasting tradition. Today, Nain carpets remain highly popular, available in various qualities, adding an element of sophistication and glamour to interiors worldwide.
